A rocky coast along the Sea of Japan; an immense plain of rice fields in the snow; Mount Fuji towering over misty wooded hills; silent temples devoid of people but brimming with Buddhist deities; a Torii gate mysteriously emerging from moving clouds and water-these are a few images from this remarkable collection of photographs by Michael Kenna, whose black-and-white work is highly renowned. Forms of Japan, brilliantly designed by Yvonne Meyer-Lohr, is organized into chapters simply titled, "Sea," "Land," "Trees," "Spirit," and "Sky." The quietly evocative photographs, often paired with classic haiku poems of Basho, Buson, Issa and others, provide a contemplative portrait of a country better-known for its energy and industry. Gorgeously reproduced to convey the enormous subtleties that exist in Michael Kenna's traditional black-and-white silver prints, the photographs in this book include both well-known and previously unpublished images from all corners of Japan: Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Okinawa and Shikoku.

For eight years before the First World War, a young Georges Braque and his friend Pablo Picasso shaped what was perhaps the most revolutionary stage in the history of modern painting: Cubism. This catalog of the accompanying exhibition focuses on Braque's turbulent pre-WWI period to reveal the processes by which the artist developed or reinvented his style in rapid succession- from Fauvism, Proto-Cubism, Analytical Cubism, papier colle to Synthetic Cubism. The amazing speed and intensity of Braque's evolution stands as a remarkable parallel to modern art's shifting focus from representation to abstraction. Bringing together sixty works from museums and private collections around the world, this book offers scholarly assessments that contextualise Braque's career amidst unprecedented technological advances, new schools of thought, and an overall acceleration of everyday life in Western Europe. This includes the invention of moving pictures, which held a particular fascination for the young artist. Film stills and documentary and archival material help readers make the connection between dynamization and the development of aesthetic forms in the visual arts, between the visual innovations of the pre-war period and the flood of media images in which we live today. More than half a century after Braque's death, this exploration of his remarkable career brings us closer to understanding the artist whom Guillaume Apollinaire considered the "touchstone" of Cubist art.

From the mid-1970s, Mike Kelley assembled an incredibly diverse and often controversial body of work. A multidisciplinary impresario, he created works on paper, paintings, sculpture, video, installation, and performance art that managed to be at once shocking yet humorous, complex yet accessible. This companion volume to a much-anticipated exhibition brings a fresh understanding to the artist's work by seeking to address the more poetic aspects of Kelley's work through Eva Meyer-Hermann's unique curatorial approach. Here she presents individual works in new combinations that cross the boundaries of chronology, bodies of work, and former artistic project groups. Identifying themes such as architecture, language, identity, Informe, power, modernisms, nostalgia, and religion, the book represents ideas that have informed Kelley's work throughout his career. As a result, the overarching lines of his oeuvre become visible and accessible. This book features essays, a fully annotated plate section, and a newly researched and revised biography and bibliography of Kelley's work. The publication promises to be the definitive work on the artist.
