Drôle d'adresse, lorsqu'on est flic, pour trouver dans un appartement d'Oslo le cadavre de la femme avec laquelle on vient de passer la nuit. Surtout si l'on ne se rappelle rien... Harry Hole n'est pas au bout de ses peines. Un braqueur, comme en état de transe, a abattu à bout portant une caissière irréprochable après lui avoir murmuré dans l'oreille ce qui aurait pu être des mots d'amour. Harry Hole parle de meurtre, sa hiérarchie d'accident.
Tant de gens auraient intérêt à le voir tomber que l'inspecteur va devoir de nouveau composer avec la loi pour sauver sa peau comme pour traquer le Mal. Ce qu'il avait flairé sera bien au-delà des apparences...
