This volume provides basic information about managing wild bees and on the use of their products. It identifies and describes major bee species and their importance for nature conservation and for sustaining livelihoods of rural people. Bee products are considered at both subsistence and commercial level, and particular attention is given to the potential for further development of managing wild been species in developing countries. The role of bees for pollination of crops and the impact of managing bees on forestry and farming are presented. Wild-bee keeping techniques, honey production and marketing, and the international trade in been products are described with further references and sources of additional information given. Using this publication, readers will better understand the complexities and opportunities for developing apiculture by rural livelihoods.
Ce rapport, préparé comme une source d'informations pour les pays membres de la FAO et pour une distribution générale, présente les projections pour la période 2001/2002 à 2005/2006 de l'offre et de la demande en engrais azotés, phosphatés et potassiques du monde.
Animal disease surveillance is key to improving disease analysis, early warning and predicting disease emergence and spread. As a preventive measure, disease surveillance is aimed at reducing animal health-related risks and major consequences of disease outbreaks on food production and livelihoods. Early warning systems are dependent on the quality of animal disease information collected at all levels via effective surveillance;
Therefore, data gathering and sharing is essential to understand the dynamics of animal diseases in diverse agro-ecological settings to support effective decision-making to prevent disease and for emergency response.
Animal disease surveillance systems track zoonotic dieases and identify emerging diseases and, as such, are recognized as a global public good to support improved animal and global public health.
The Expert Consultation was convened to review an initial draft of the International Guidelines as called for by the FAO Committee on Fisheries at its twenty-seventh session in 2007. This expert consultation was preceded by an expert consultation in November 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand, on deep-sea fisheries in the high seas. The consultation adopted a draft of the international guidelines to be forwarded on to a technical consultation for review and adoption.
The session was attended by 58 Members of FAO, and by observers from three intergovernmental and three international non-governmental organizations.
The Sub-Committee appreciated the efforts of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department in responding to the recommendations of the past session of the Sub-Committee.
The Working Group considered and made decisions on matters concerning the Programme of Work and Budget for the 2011-12 biennium for the WGFM including a review of the regional strategy and priorities for regional fisheries management, the outcome of the Special Meeting on RECOFI Consolidation and Development, and stock status reporting in support of long- term sustainable fisheries management in the RECOFI region. Significantly, the WGFM adopted a Recommendation on Minimum Data Reporting in the RECOFI Area. This is the first Recommendation adopted by the WGFM. The WGFM also considered a proposal by the Sultanate of Oman in relation to a proposal for a feasibility study to review the development of a regional database on violations, establish a list of vessels authorized to fish by RECOFI Members and promote the establishment of a regional fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance information exchange scheme.
The Expert Consultation reviewed the Guidelines for the Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries (Revision 1) adopted by the Twenty-eighth Session of COFI and published by FAO in 2009, the report of the Expert Consultation on the FAO Guidelines for Ecolabelling Capture Fisheries (2008), the report of the Expert Consultation on the Development of International Guidelines for the Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Inland Capture Fisheries (2006) and a background paper prepared by an FAO consultant that synthesized main points from the above documents.
The Expert Consultation reviewed and refined draft Guidelines for the Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Inland Capture Fisheries for consideration by the Twenty-ninth Session of COFI. The draft Guidelines follow closely the structure, language and conceptual approach of the revised Marine Guidelines. Also published in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish.
The Panel was convened in response to the agreement by the twenty-fifth session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries on the terms of the reference for an Expert advisory panel for assessment of proposal to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and to the endorsement of the 26th Session of the COFI.
This Report includes the assessment of each of the six proposal made by the Panel. Available in French and Spanish.
The workshop was organized with three objectives: a) to review and analyze the existing knowledge on the application of feed management as a tool for reducing feed costs in aquaculture, b) to identify the major issues and constraints of feed management and those that need to be addressed and c) to prepare a list of recommendations to define/suggest the future course of action including the preparation of technical manuals/guidelines for dissemination to farmers.
A comprehensive set of recommendations was developed to overcome the constraints that were identified and it is anticipated that these recommendations will guide the FAO's future work in this area.
The Consultation was held at FAO Headquarters, Rome, Italy, from 8 to 12 November 2010. The Consultation was convened by the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture of the United Nations upon the recommendation of produced recommendations for consideration by the Twenty-ninth Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries.
The Consultation was funded by the Governments of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America and by the European Commission. Also published in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish.
The Workshop was convened by FAO to present the outcomes (results and analysis) of the case studies which pilot-tested the Nha Trang SSA contribution indicators using various types of SSA in the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam and the cross-country synthesis, to refine and validate the indicators and evaluate their robustness, replicability and applicability in helping measure SSA sector performance for wider adoption and use and to draw a list of recommendations for generating further support to the SSA subsector of sustainable aquaculture and rural development programmes based on a broad understanding of sector performance (as measured by indicators) as well as risks and threats.
The Expert Consultation considered a number of issues relating to the Guidelines and the Evaluation Framework. Inter alia, it noted that the Guidelines, and therefore the draft Evaluation Framework, relate only to the biological sustainability of fishery resources and not to other aspects that might have an impact on sustainability.
Also noted were the many commonalities between the Marine Ecolabelling Guidelines and the draft Inland Ecolabelling Guidelines, and that the major difference between them relates to the consideration of enhancement and the use of introduced and/or translocated species in the draft Inland Guidelines.
The Expert Consultation noted that in both sets of Guidelines there is insufficient attention given to the chain of custody. The respective responsibilities of States and ecolabelling schemes in relation to assistance to developing countries was also discussed. The draft Evaluation Framework is provided in Appendix D with an explanation of the approach in the body of this report.
A major objective of the State of the World's Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture (SOLAW) is primarily to raise awareness on the status of land and water resources, at the same time it scopes and inform on opportunities and challenges. Throughout the years, FAO has established itself as a unique source for a variety of global data on land and water.
This book takes full advantage of these data, presenting the most comprehensive and up-to-date global overview of the availability of land and water resources, their use and management, as well as related future trends and developments. SOLAW takes into consideration major drivers of global change, including demands driven by demographics, changing consumption patterns, biofuel production and climate change impacts. The SOLAW report, deals primarily with the issue of land and water for crops.
It examines the kinds of production responses are necessary to meet demand, while assessing the potential of the world's land and water resources to support these desired increases in output and productivity.
Risks and tradeoffs are examined, and options reviewed for managing these without harm to the resource base.
The five main chapters cover an analysis of the current status of land and water resources together with trends. They offer an assessment of the biophysical and technical aspects of the resources and their use, including projections for the year 2050. They review current institutional arrangements, and assess socio-economic and environmental impacts of current land and water management. Current and future threats to land and water are also reviewed, together with their implications for a series of major systems at risk. A series of requirements and options to achieve the necessary levels of output and productivity required in a sustainable way are presented. Finally, the report assesses the institutional responses at local, national and international levels, with an analysis of lessons for the future. The conclusions present some policy recommendations. What is offered is a pragmatic step by step approaches towards a more sustainable, lower-carbon intensive agricultural production that is based on ecologically-sensitive management of land and water by farmers, supported by policies, and institutions.
This publication presents an updated assessment and review of the current status of the world's marine fishery resources. It summarizes the information available for each FAO Statistical Areas; discusses the major trends and changes that have occurred with the main fishery resources exploited in each area; and reviews the stock assessment work undertaken in support of fisheries management in each region. The review is based mainly on official catch statistics up until 2009 and relevant stock assessment and other complementary information available until 2010. It aims to provide the FAO Committee on Fisheries and, more generally, policy-makers, civil society, fishers and managers of world fishery resources with a comprehensive, objective and global review of the state of the living marine resources.
This manual on bats and their role in emerging infectious diseases in animals and humans underlines their important role in maintaining the delicate balance in ecosystems that support human, plant and animal life.
This document is a manual meant to be used by epidemiologists, wildlife officials, farmers, livestock veterinarians, zoologists, and any number of different professionals who might be coming into increased contact with bats. It is a hands-on reference to their history, biology, monitoring and handling them, especially amid growing evidence they can be a route for introduction of emerging diseases in livestock and humans.
